Montevideo / L'Alternative, 2024
Audio-installation, 12:33
Monitors, stereo-sound, riso-print (edition of 2), keychain
The installation Montevideo / L'alternative explores the ambient qualities of memory, its title referring to two places that are important in the artists' memory. One located in her hometown Rotterdam and the other in Brussels: the city of her adult life. In a looping monologue, an avatar describes a walk (or rather, a run) through a virtual space (referred to as 'the map'), and recounts adventures and findings she encounters on her way through the limited square in a virtual world. The monologue is written from the perspective of the avatar >Loreandthefeels<, with which the artist is active on SecondLife since 23 September 2023.
More specifically, it recounts the first time she entered the map when she started playing, wearing the default outfit and misunderstanding hints given by veteran players. The voice-over is supported by a soundtrack created from chops, loops and samples from open source libraries. Relating to the sounds playing in the different rooms one encounters when exploring an online map, the soundwork interchanges between trapbeats, piano chords, faraway footsteps and ambient rustling.
The installation is completed with a riso-print depicting the office of a doctors practice, modified through generated imagery to fit the memory of a place in Rotterdam. A souvenir from Brussels, a keychain with the first letter of the artists' name, is attached to the key of the storage door in the exhibition space.
Created in the context of Blank Pages hosted in Sparewheel (Brussels) in 2024.
